1974 Capri MKI
Fighting terrorism is like being a goalkeeper. You can make a hundred brilliant saves but the only shot that people remember is the one that gets past you. ~Paul Wilkinson

There is a lot of information to be found on the Internet about the Ford Capri. Yes, the Ford Capri. This car was built in Germany and the UK by Ford Europe. There have been others, but this truly is the only Capri. There are basically three versions of the Capri, the MKI, MKII, and MKIII. The US only saw the MKI and MKII. I hope you'll find my MKI to be a fine representative of this fantastic car.
My Capri History
I bought my first Capri in 1981. It was a '74 V6 with 73,000 miles. The Capri served me well in college even with the total abuse I put the car through. At that time I considered the Capri a poor man's Porsche. Or at least a college students version of the Porsche. As I've reached 40+ years and have gained some experience with Porsche's, I've found the Capri to still be a fun and exciting car to drive. If fact today, when I drive a Porsche, few people notice. Check out my Turbo S. This is one of the great sports cars of all time. It rarely gets a second look. When I drive the Capri, people stop to talk about frequently; I get thumbs-up on the highway, teenyboppers ask for a ride, it has a lot of appeal. People, young and old just love the Capri.
Back to that first Capri. I pulled the emissions off, installed all Mallory Ignition parts (dual points suck), added headers, custom exhaust, and an air dam. I drove it hard to 120,000 miles and only had two problems besides the dual point distributor; new water pump (helps if you put the thermostat back in the correct place) and new drive shaft. I raced two summers in SCCA Autocross and placed second overall in the Pirelli Series one summer. I was the one of two drivers who showed up for all races. I couldn't beat a bug-eyed Sprite; he showed up for all races, too. On performance, I know what the numbers say and I do not know how accurate the speedometer is, but I drove this car 120 mph on US Highway 60 between Magdalena and Socorro. I drove it right up to 100 mph many times. So the top speed is clearly above the published 105 mph. Please know, I was young and stupid when I did this and in no way approve or recommend such behavior. I eventually sold the Capri when I was about to get out of school.
I took the next several years off until 2000 when I bought a 1973 MKI 2000. This was sold to gentleman in Kansas. I then bought and parted out a '73 MKI V6. I then bought this Capri. I've bought and sold two MKII's, those shown on this site. I have a '73 MKI V6 auto in the shop and another '74 MKI V6 in the yard for parts. So I still need another MKII. So if anyone has a '76 or '77 MKII V6 4spd without rust cancer, let me know, I'm in the market. Does not have to be running and interior can be trashed, although I prefer some useable interior parts.
1974 Capri MKI
This, my most prized car, it is a 1974 MKI 2.8 liter V6 4 speed Capri with 63,000 original miles. I bought it in 2001. I first saw the car in 2000 when it appeared on eBay. I bought it from the eBay winner a few months later. Research appears to show there has been three owners. The first owner used it as a show car then put the miles on it. A very few modifications were made to the car. It has modified fender wells which protect it from common problem areas for rust. It has a rust protection undercoat that is so thick it could be a street HMAC surface coat. I has also had the exhaust replaced. So, one tail pipe on either side of the car as opposed to stock where the pipes come together on the drivers side. The car was eventually traded into a dealer. He sold the car on eBay. The second buyer was in Florida. He had it for that short time and enjoyed it as much as I have.
