The 944 Turbo S is the highest performance version of the 944 product line. The Turbo S was introduced in 1988 as a limited production run, built to the same specs as the "Turbo Cup" race car. 718 of these car entered the US. A total of 1635 were produced. The Turbo S is the fastest production 4 cylinder ever in 1988. I have yet to find a source that shows there has been a faster production car to date. In 1988 it was the fifth fastest, straight-line, production car, right behind the Ferrari Testarossa, Ferrari GTO, Lamborghini Countach and Porsche 928S 4. Pretty good company. When you head to the slalom or skidpad, these too will likely fall behind.
